Strictly Saturdays | Week Eleven @ The Musicals

Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls, get ready, take your seats, get comfy, because Strictly is going to the Musicals. I love this week, I think it gives a real excuse for people to go to town with costumes and characters and really sells the dances. It’s always a great spectacle and comes with an extra pro dance so what isn’t too love huh?

Strictly Saturdays is a weekly review of Strictly Come Dancing. Expect biased reviews, uneducated dancing critique, and sass.

I have to say that as sad as I am that Saffron has gone, I was ready to say goodbye to the wet wipe that was AJ and I am pleased that someone I didn’t love went so that my favourites could get through. And to a hella week, Musicals is always a lot of fun and produces some epically memorable routines and moments. I am sure this show will be no different.

Oh and another opening number by the pros..but…erm…what is with this new trend of having the dancers decide to sing. Last week it was Bruno, this week Kevin and Anton. I know Kevin was in a musical but I want to see you dance folks. I have said all this but I am living to see Kevin and Motsi, and Shirley and Anton dance together. OH MY GOD  it took me longer than it should have done to recognise that it was Craig in drag, that was so impressive! Slayin! You need to watch it – here.

I am so done with the outfits that Tess has worn. Today she looks like a piñata vomited sequins and I am not at all about that look. I also didn’t like Claudia’s look but jeez Tess. The judges all looked great, I really they have been largely nailing this year. At least someone has huh!

Let’s dance…

Chris Ramsay and Karen Hauer | Foxtrot to ‘Consider Yourself’ from ‘Oliver!’ (watch here)

I bloody love how shocked Chris is that he is still here, and I think we’re with him there. I’d bloody love him to go all the way, but I fear that this week, when he has to do a ballroom dance. They can go for the characters though.

I mean when he is out of hold it was hilarious and entertaining and really embodied enjoying dancing and being a The Artful Dodger. When he was in hold it was a bit iffy, thankfully there wasn’t toooo much in hold. I really enjoyed that though, it was properly entertaining.

Craig: 6 Motsi: 7 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 7 Total: 28

Liz: 7 | 9 Emma:7 | 9

Alex Scott and Neil Jones | Samba to ‘Joyful Joyful’ from Sister Act (watch here)

I really can’t tell if I think that this will be really good or really bad, because they are full of beans and energy and happiness and that is definitely needed for this, but it’s a difficult dance. I love how optimistic they always are.

Neil as a pianist LOL. It’s like watching Zumba at the start there, well just throughout. There is a bit of a bounce and a shimmy, she is really trying but you can’t…right…it’s not you can’t tell because you can, but it was pure happiness and effortless and looked like she was living it without overly placing it. I feel like she danced the choreography well, but I am not completely sure it was pure samba and that was on Neil.

Craig: 6 Motsi: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 Total: 27

Liz: 6 | 7 Emma: 6 | 8

Kelvin Fletcher and Oti Mabuse | American Smooth to ‘Gaston’ from ‘The Beauty and the Beast’ (watch here)

I love these two, but it has annoyed me that multiple reports say he has complained about the nature of the attention he has received and then is dancing as Gaston, but, that aside, HOLY HECK I have high hopes for this. ERM, HELLO Luke Evans, you belter you. Bloody love him.

How have they made him look unmuscly and not as hot? The dance looked amazing and he had the accents that characterised Gaston which fitted well, but it was lacking something. The ending on the chandelier was really fun, but it was just not quite perfect. I’m not sure, I think he peaked for me a couple of weeks ago.

Craig: 9 Motsi: 10 Shirley: 10 Bruno: 10 Total: 39

Liz: 9 | 8 Emma: 9 | 7

Karim Zeroual and Amy Dowden | Jive to ‘You Can’t Stop The Beat’ from ‘Hairspray’ (watch here)

I bloody love this musical and this song and feel like there is no better full on song possible than having this for him. I have such high hopes for this, like this could be the dance of the series if he nails this. Michael bloody BALL like what is with this week’s show huh?

That was phenomenal. It was high intensity, packed with content, stylised, brilliant, and such a great song and great dance and yes. That is the best dance of the series so far. WOW. You better get that 10 paddle out Craig. Amy looked like she was tiring faster than he was there. BLOODY love Motsi, hero. That was professional level, or for me at least when I was watching. I don’t know what was better, Craig standing or Shirley reacting to Craig standing.

I mean that Claudia’s corner reaction is hilariously brilliant and that was amazing.

Craig: 10 Motsi: 10 Shirley: 10 Bruno: 10 Total: 40

Liz: 10 | 10 Emma: 10 | 10

Emma Barton and Anton du Beke | Charleston to ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ from ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ (watch here)

No offence guys, but this is a comedown, like that is an impossible act to follow. I feel like this will be a good look for her and possibly a good dance but it will be a bit forgotten behind that belting jive. They really quite irritate me.

OK that had a lot of swivel (almost too much), and the faces were accentuated (again almost too much), but that was a really good dance. It had a lot of content and personality, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I kinda hate that it is all about Anton when he 10 paddle comes out, y’know?

Craig: 9 Motsi: 10 Shirley: 10 Bruno: 10 Total: 39

Judges Favourite | Liz’s Favourite | Emma’s Favourite – Karim and Amy’s Jive

I think that was a night of two halves eh? My favourites were up first and even though I liked them, neither were absolutely amazing and were notably hitting their limits I think. Neither had styles that really suited them. Then came out the 3 that must be the favourite and only dropped 2 marks between them. I mean the quality and the content and the characterisation, jeez Louise it was impressive. I have a feeling that Karim’s Jive will be one I rewatch and rewatch and rewatch because it was beyond phenomenal.

I am really gutted that for half the voting time, the online voting system didn’t work. I am not usually cynical and I am sure it was a technical error, but part of me can’t see beyond the fix claims. Anyway, until tomorrow night…

…keep dancing!

*P.S. Dances to follow when they have been uploaded*
