Strictly Saturdays | Week Seven

Halloween has been and gone, which means November is here and things are hotting up in the ballroom and cooling down outside. I absolutely love this time of year. Warm boots and jumpers, birthdays, thanksgiving, Christmas songs and decorations everywhere, dark football nights, I just love it. I feel like this is where the show really hots up too. Suddenly Halloween has gone and it’s all serious from here on out and I am about it!

Strictly Saturdays is a weekly review of Strictly Come Dancing. Expect biased reviews, uneducated dancing critique, and sass.

Can you believe it has already been a week since the Halloween Spooktacular that saw a special Addam’s family dance, and was full of drama and injury! It was unfortunately time to see Catherine and Johannes go and I can’t lie, I am really going to miss them in the show. We have also lost Will and Janette because of Will’s knee injury which is pretty sad as well, I feel like they were cute and really into it and were coming out of their shells as a partnership, such a loss for them to have already left. And Neil is still not fit to dance with Alex which is absolutely devastating, because as much as I like to see Kevin back, I want me some Alex and Neil.

Right, let’s just say it. What is with all the jazzy sequinned and sparkly numbers this year, because Tess is going outside her normal wear and as much as I did quite like her and Motsi’s outfits, they did also look like they were wrapped in two of the wrappings from a Christmas chocolate box. I was digging the boys suits though, nice bit of jazzy print there! And I am liking the suited look for Claudia, but loving it for Shirley. She looks sensational. (also Gorka, stop being so stunning and adorable when you walk Claudia down the stairs because I CANNOT deal with it!)

Let’s dance…

Karim Zeroual and Amy Dowden | Quickstep to ‘Mr. Pinstripe Suit’ (watch here)

I love how excitable these two always are, I definitely think that these have the energy to do a really great dance. I love how she broke it down too, I mean I feel like the breakdown was a little obvious but I liked actually seeing a little a bit about how they learnt.

I love the bright colours and the theming of this dance, it is being executed perfectly. I can’t tell if it is a little slow, or if he is just properly dancing the quickstep instead of running around the floor. I liked that though, it suited their style and energy and was a great opener.

Craig: 9 Motsi: 10 Shirley: 10 Bruno: 10  Total: 39

Liz: 10 | 8  Emma: 10 | 8

Michelle Visage and Giovanni Pernice | Paso Doble to ‘Another Bites the Dust’ (watch here)

That dance last week though, watched so much this week. I kind of like seeing the better dancers struggle, it makes me feel a little less like they just knew it already. I do still like these though, they make me smile.

I kinda liked the concept of this dance, the two matadors – if anyone can pull off a skirt, suit, and matador jacket it is Michelle. It was a bit straight up and not as big as I would have liked but it wasn’t bad.

Craig: 8 Motsi: 9 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 8 Total: 34

Liz: 8 | 8 Emma: 8 | 8

Emma Weymouth and Aljaz Skorjanec | Samba to ‘I Don’t Care’ (watch here)

I worry about this dance for her. She is elegant and tall and flowing and this is a gritty dirty dance. I have this feeling that it won’t fit her style and yeah, not sure at all. I love their coats though.

Yeah, so, I didn’t love that. It was so placed and pristine, and even though she had a bit of the bounce and the energy, I just didn’t think it was her dance at all. Nothing seemed to carry through from legs to upper body. She looked like she loved it though. You weren’t invited Bruno – loving savage Emma.

Craig: 5 Motsi: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 Total: 26

Liz: 6 | 5 Emma: 7 | 8

Awwwwwww Will, I can’t believe he has had to drop out. It’s so sad, but I am glad he looks like he is loving it, and it sounds like it isn’t career ending which is amazing. Awww Janette, such a cute little button, I love her so much,

Kelvin Fletcher and Oti Mabuse | Viennese Waltz to ‘Say Something’ (watch here)

I think I agree with Kelvin, not sure I would want to be spinning all up the place, but his arms are going to make up for it because I saw the shirt he is wearing at the beginning of the show. I get this impression that he has no clue what he is actually doing, he just does what he is told to, and I kinda dig them.

Oti does such dramatic Viennese Waltzes. He didn’t quite look like he was leading it, and there looked like there was a little mistake in the middle, but I liked it. I loved fiery Shirley, she da boss. Awwww Oti, that’s adorable.

Craig: 8 Motsi: 9 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 9 Total: 34

Liz: 9 | 8 Emma: 8 | 8.5

Saffron Barker and A J Pritchard | Salsa to ‘Instruction’ (watch here)

These are children. These should not be salsa-ing. I mean, no, I don’t want to see this and them. I feel like AJ is the most dead behind the eyes guy to try and infuse passion into anything.

I really wasn’t feeling that, no, no not for me. It was powerful and fearless, but it was occasionally off time and she just really didn’t look like it was her dance and was out of her depth. I didn’t like or enjoy it that much to be honest in terms of the dance or theme.

Craig: 6 Motsi: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 Total: 27

Liz: 6 | 5 Emma: 6 | 5

Alex Scott and Kevin Clifton | American Smooth to ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ (watch here)

I am gutted that Neil is absent again, but Kevin is a good fit for her. I loved their mic on, but oh watching little Neil watching them dance, he looks so sad. I really like them together, but I hope Neil is back soon. They’re too cute dancing for him. I also do think she is the best one to have had to have a new partner, but she is running with it and doing her best which is amazing to see.

That dress though, wow, she looks breathtaking. And do you know what, she looks like she is having the best time of her life and I really like that. It’s coming together for her, I really liked that. I love how defensive Kevin is about her, like he is so protective as though he wants to make sure she gets to dance with him again.

Craig: 7 Motsi: 8 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 8 Total: 31

Liz: 8 | 9 Emma: 8 | 9

Chris Ramsay and Karen Hauer | Couple’s Choice Street/Commercial to ‘Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble’ (watch here)

Oh that was definitely Rosie screaming, and oh wow Claudia’s reaction to the link. Oh his little family section, I love how he is and how fun and happy he is. He is super funny to be fair, it paid off. Oh Rosie and Robin, like, I can’t even. I love these so much. I love how much he is going for it and now he is dancing to this, awww Chris.

I mean it was unique, and it was fun, and it was just like he was living his absolute best life and I BLOODY LOVED IT. I mean Craig is trying too hard to be down with the kids, but love it. Oh Motsi yes. That was perfect for him, and ROSIE awwww.

Craig: 8 Motsi: 9 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 8  Total: 34

Liz: 9 | 10 Emma: 9 | 10

Emma Barton and Anton du Beke | Rumba to ‘Woman In Love’ (watch here)

I ddidn’t love it last week and I despise the rumba, so I have precisely no hopes that this will be something I will enjoy. It looks like she is finding it hard, and I feel like this will show how little chemistry they have. Like yes, she can act, but she can’t create something that’s not there and learn to dance.

She suits the fringe. No, no no no no no. I can’t even, like, just so many nos. It seemed really fast, like she wasn’t holding any moves, and I was nearly bringing my tea back up. No thanks.

Right, side bar here folks. Brendan used to get so much shit for defending his partner after a judge give negative feedback, but no-one says anything when Anton rudely talks over a judge. Not just any judge, the head judge and the person in the world largely considered to be THE QUEEN of the rumba. If anyone can give genuine feedback it is her. I get he is defending her, but the mutterings and talking over people is so bloody rude. The judges know what they are doing, and that dance got what it deserved, accept it.

Oh, and another thing can we stop with the ‘Oh I was filming for Eastenders’. Yes, you have got a job, so does most of the other contestants, it’s a job and you chose to be paid to do this show on top so grow up.

Craig: 5 Motsi: 6 Shirley: 5 Bruno: 6  Total: 22

Liz: 5 | 1 Emma: 5 | 3

Mike Bushell and Katya Jones | Charleston to ‘Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines’ (watch here)

He just looks like he his trying so hard, and I love watching him learn because it feels so so deserved when it comes together. I think he will really get the vibe of this dance, I’m just a tiny bit worried about he speed and intensity.

OK, first things what flew off? His costume or poppy or…? He looked like he loved it and gave it a lot, but it was good and had the vibe and swivel. I quite liked it.

Judges Favourite – Karim and Amy’s Quickstep

 Liz’s Favourite | Emma’s Favourite  – Chris and Karen’s Street/Commercial

Well well that was an interesting show huh. I feel like there were struggles tonight, people dancing dances outside their comfort zones and not quite grasping it as fast as they would like. That said, there were some brilliant dances through the evening and some truly joyful performances – and yes I am thinking about Chris and Karen, and about Alex and Kevin, because I will be rewatching both when they come on later!! I am sorry for the tangent later on in the show but I have thought it multiple times this year and I just snapped, because there is no need to talk over someone and be so rude. You should be ashamed of yourself Mr. Du Beke.

Results

This week hasn’t half been a Strictly Roller Coaster and I am feeling pretty rubbish if I am honest. Tweeting opinions based on feedback was something that’s been received fine in the past, but this weekend I received a lot of unfair backlash (or at least what I believed to be unfair backlash) and as a result I’m not sure whether I will bother doing this anymore. I don’t want to leave this week without a review of the results show, because that wouldn’t be fair to the results show itself.

It started with a wacky and weirdly wonderful Elton John tribute dance medley thing and I kinda enjoyed it despite not being a lover of his,

Anyway, until next week (maybe)….

…keep dancing!
