Down The TBR Hole #2

Welcome back one and all to Down the TBR hole, where I am attempting to reduce my TBR in number and remove any unwanted books from the list. My list is not insurmountable, and I have made a good effort in reducing it this year, but I want to try and remove any of the books that I no longer want to read, and remove the ones that are only on there because I think they should be and not because I actually want to read them. OK, so, last time I managed to ditch a few reads and my TBR ended on 233 books, but since then I have added books I have received as gifts and added books that I have acquired through charity book hauls, so it currently actually stands at 244 books.

So, how does it work?

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

1. The Fault in Our Stars John Green

Why is is there? If added this when I joined Goodreads, which happened to coincide with the time that this books, and in fact all John Green’s novels, were going through their big moment. I never read it at the time, and I feel like I have missed to curve on reading this and that it’s not in my genre anyway.
Do I own it? No
Verdict? Ditch

2. The Lovely Bones Alice Sebold

Why is is there? I hear that this book is creepy and about a paedophile and a murderer and if I am honest, I really can’t decide what I think about it. I haven’t seen the film, so I don’t know the full story and I basically can’t decide if I actually want to read it. This was a hard one, but, I think the potential good outweighs the creep factor.
Do I own it? Yes
Verdict? Keep

3. The Kite Runner Khaled Hosseini

Why is is there? I have only ever tried to read the audiobook for this and couldn’t get into it. It’s one of those books that I really want to say I have read but when it comes to physically reading it, I haven’t made it there yet, y’know. I would like to read it some day though.
Do I own it? Yes
Verdict? Keep

4. The Godfather Mario Puzo

Why is is there? I knew there was a book that birthed the film adaptation, and felt like it would be something I would really like and so added it to my TBR. I don’t remember it’s a book a lot of the time but think it would be something that I would really enjoy.
Do I own it? No
Verdict? Keep

5. The Bourne Supremacy Robert Ludlum

Why is is there? Do I want to read this book? Yes. Do I want to read all about Jason Bourne? Absolutely. Have I read the first book in this series? Erm, no. I have decided that, as this is the second book in a series where the first is on my TBR to that I can delete this for now as the first will hold the series place on the list.
Do I own it? Yes
Verdict? Ditch

6. Red Dragon Thomas Harris

Why is is there? I find the character of Hannibal Lector equal parts terrifying and intriguing. I have enjoyed some of the film adaptations of these books over the years and would really like to read the books one day too.
Do I own it? No
Verdict? Keep

7. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Mark Haddon

Why is is there? This book is on my list because lots of people have told me that this is a good book to read and that I should finish it at one point. I know absolutely nothing about it and have never actually had the desire to pick it up and read more into it.
Do I own it? No
Verdict? Ditch

8. A Thousand Splendid Suns Khaled Hosseini

Why is is there? This is on here because I own it and because I really actually would like to read Hosseini’s books at some point, but it’s not something that I have got round to yet, but I want to find out if I like stuff by him before I keep more of his books on my TBR.
Do I own it? Yes
Verdict? Ditch

9. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams

Why is is there? I looked at this on my TBR and was surprised at myself that I still haven’t actually read it yet. I really quite like Sci-fi and space and unusual stories and feels like this falls in that bracket for sure.
Do I own it? Yes
Verdict? Keep

10. The Bourne Identity Robert Ludlum

Why is is there? I don’t know exactly why this is lower on my list than the second instalment, but there we go. I really like thrillers and have enjoyed other Ludlum books so this is definitely a book that is a more when I read it than if I ever want to.
Do I own it? Yes
Verdict? Keep

This round:
Kept – 6
Ditched – 4

Overall:
Kept – 9
Ditched – 11

Well that’s all for the second edition of Down the TBR Hole, I am definitely going to make this a somewhat regular feature. There is something cathartic about culling your TBR and accepting that you have no interest in a book you added years ago. My TBR currently stands at 240 books which really isn’t too bad. I have a habit of added books blindly to my TBR so I need to actually narrow it down to what I want to read.

Have I ditched anything I shouldn’t have?

Have I kept something that’s not worth my time?

Let me know what you think?

  1. Every since I read The Kite Runner, Hosseini books are an automatic add to TBR. He’s an amazing writer. The Lovely Bones is one of my favorites! And The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is amazing!
