Strictly Saturdays: Week 7

Good evening ladies and gentleman and welcome to another edition of Strictly Saturdays. After last week‘s Halloween Spooktacular, we’re back to normal proceedings, no scary make-up and extravagant costumes, nope, it’s all about the dancing. I was pretty sad to see Seann and Katya leave last week, but it was probably time, so I need a new favourite to support. This year’s crop is that good that I am struggling to choose! Once again, I am on holiday which means that I have only managed to watch the Youtube Live Feed and not the full show so this will be a little lighter than a usual post, but I hope you enjoy the dancing!

Lauren Steadman and AJ Pritchard Jive to ‘Girlfriend’ (watch here)

Going into this dance I was a little apprehensive about how she was going to balance during the kicks and flicks, but I needn’t have bothered. That was quick and light, the flicks were sharp and she looked like she was loving it. I really felt like she got into that dance there which is the first time I have felt that watching her, and that didn’t slow down. Well done guys.

Graeme Swann and Oti Mabuse Waltz to ‘The Last Waltz’ (watch here)

I thought it was sweet and it was elegant and it was identifiably a waltz from start to finish, no fading, no crap in the middle, just proper ballroom dancing. He has the height and the frame to make it look effortless. I quite liked that.

Craig: 6 Darcey: 7 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 8 Total: 29

Kate Silverton and Aljaz Skorjanec Argentine Tango to ‘Assassin’s Tango’ (watch here)

It’s not that she isn’t doing the right things, or making the right faces, and she definitely has the core strength to do some impressive moves, it’s just a little slow. I think of this dance being rapid and quick and struggling to keep up with the flicks and intricacies and that was as slow as some rumbas. Not gonna lie, I didn’t like that much.

Craig: 4 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 7 Total: 23

Dr. Ranj Singh and Janette Manrara Samba to ‘Freedom 90’ (watch here)

Camp party Ranj is back and I am living for it. He is smiling and bouncing and it is noticeably a samba, but that’s about all I can say about it. I don’t like sambas as the best of times.

Craig: 6 Darcey: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 Total: 27

Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton ‘Couple’s Choice’ Street and Commercial to ‘Empire State of Mind (Part II)’ (watch here)

It took me a little bit of time to work out how it was street and commercial but then it threw in some moves and boom, I got it. I really liked this dance, it was style bending and slick and it was so cute and them. I thought she danced that really as well, she is getting really good.

Craig: 9 Darcey: 9 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 9 Total: 36

Danny John Jules and Amy Dowden Quickstep to ‘Freedom’ (watch here)

Well that was a bit of a mess, eh? The bits out of hold were smooth and assured and looked amazing, but then he got into hold and there was a wide enough gap to drive between them, and the footwork was shoddy and out of time. I know she had an injury that hampered rehearsals, but that was just not good enough (and was overmarked in my opinion).

Craig: 4 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 5 Bruno: 7 Total: 22

Ashley Roberts and Pasha Kovalev Foxtrot to ‘Orange Coloured Sky’ (watch here)

These two have really come into their own now and have got it. I really liked this, it was sweet and smooth, and there was no faffing and what not, it was just into hold and dancing, no messing round. I like that, Len would have loved that. I know you expect a lot from a dancer (which she is) but you can’t take it away from her when she dances like that.

Craig: 9 Darcey: 10 Shirley: 10 Bruno: 10 Total: 39

Faye Tozer Smith and Giovanni Pernice Tango to ‘Call Me’ (watch here)

I really like this song choice, it is fierce and she is looking incredible in that dress! I really liked a tango and even though I wasn’t sure about the box, cube thing there, it was seriously good, intense, full of passion. I really liked that dance.

Craig: 9 Darcey: 10 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 10 Total: 38

Charles Venn and Karen Clifton Viennese Waltz to ‘Piano Man’ (watch here)

He just doesn’t look like he is into this one bit, like he is just going through the motions. I wouldn’t vote for this if I was a fan, he just doesn’t look present in it and like he loves it. I really didn’t like that much, I didn’t think his frame was that good either.

Craig: 6 Darcey: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 8 Total: 28

Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell Paso Doble to ‘Pompeii” (watch here)

There are some great shapes being thrown here. There is some stomping and showing off and all the good stuff we love in a Paso (there was even a bit of flamenco clapping in there too!) Dianne didn’t half hit the ground in the middle of the dance there. All in all, bloody impressive Joe!

6. Graeme and Oti – 29

Overall

Wow, well that was a bit dramatic eh? Lots of 10’s being thrown around again, and a messy routine that saw a favourite slip to the bottom of the table. I really thought Joe and Dianne, and Lauren and AJ stepped up their game this week when I thought they both might struggle with the dances they ended up with. I really liked the top 4’s dances, they were undoubtedly my favourites. I’m worried for Kate and Aljaz, and for Charles and Karen (well I say worried, I hope they go). People will vote for Danny and Amy as he messed up and she’s been injured, but I’d still be concerned – bottom of the leaderboard curse and all that! Until next time…

…keep dancing!
