Good evening ladies and gentleman and welcome to Strictly at the Movies. It’s possibly my favourite Strictly week, everyone dressing up and dancing in characters to some of the most iconic film numbers, it just doesn’t get more dramatic and over the top! I like that this is always early on, when most of the contestants are still in the competition and there are lots of crazy and wonderful dance numbers. We always see a dance disaster, someone comes out of their shell, and often there is a memorable moment or two to be had (Jay and Aliona’s Pulp Fiction Live anyone?).
Last week saw the first elimination of this year’s competition, and if I am honest I was quite happy about it. Not only were all my favourites safely through in a week were I was unable to vote, but one of my least favourites left the competition for good. This year’s first victims were Susannah and Anton, and as harsh as it sounds, neither will be missed in my eyes and as she was definitely the worst dancer of the bunch, it seemed fairest all round too.
That music though, that Harry Potter soundtrack is just so iconic and it gives me all the feels. I loved the dance so much, I’m not sure how much dancing there actually was versus acting badly and rather crap graphics. I just loved it, to the point that it might be one of my favourite things that I have ever seen on Strictly and I have seen every single episode of Strictly! (watch here)
Also, I know I mention it so much, but the judges arriving out of time so I was really pleased that they managed to hit their cue. They all look pretty good too! Tess’s dress is really nice (although that’s a crazy slit) and Claudia’s is pretty nice. Darcey’s looks good but is a bit tight, and Shirley has gone heavy on the neck/shoulder chandelier. It all fits though, ready for movie week…
Vick Hope and Graziano Di Prima Salsa to ‘Take A Chance On Me’ from “Mamma Mia!’ (watch here)
I really like this song, and I really quite liked the film despite my better judgement so I have some high hopes for this dance. They can do lifts and need intricate arm work for this, so I have a feeling it will be one of those dances that goes very very right or very very wrong.
They was so fun and full of life. Their faces and their steps were pretty awesome, and it was so in theme with the movie. The lifts were good and there was a bit of hip and arm action. That was good. And he was so into it, it was hilarious!

Dr. Ranj Singh and Janette Manrara Quickstep to ‘Prince Ali’ from ‘Aladdin’ (watch here)
I love songs from Aladdin and I love these too. They are little pocket rockets and have so much energy that I am quite sure this is going to be a quickstep with some beans. I am sure he mentioned something about a flying carpet last week too. Please oh please let there be an epic entrance…
Oh they went with the elephant instead, I can deal with that. That was really cute and they were loving it, but I think it looked a little slow? I’m not sure if it was the music, because there were a lot of moves in there, but it still felt a little slow. It was a lot of fun, there were smiles and cheeky moments.

Lee Ryan and Nadiya Bychkova Cha Cha to ‘The Power Of Love’ from ‘Back To The Future’ (watch here)
I don’t really like these but think they were too good to be in the dance off last week. I am quite sure they will step up their game and that this will be really good, but I am quite sure I’ll forget it by the end of the night as this is not a favourite film/song of mine either. The whole thing with the the board and the glasses, this is why people don’t like you.
He’s getting tired by the end of this dance, and that’s not because it was so good in the first half. I didn’t like it, I’m sorry Lee but it wasn’t brilliant. It didn’t feature a lot of dancing and just lots of prancing and moving around her.

Kate Silverton and Aljaz Skorjanec Foxtrot to ‘Why Don’t You Do Right’ from ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ (watch here)
I don’t know this song at all, but I ma hoping for a lot after last week’s tango masterclass. She really brought her game up a few notches last week, I’m hoping for more of the same. He is a ballroom boy too, I’d imagine this will be good. I really love that she has gone for it with the Jessica Rabbit costume too! I really like them, they’re cute and funny and she’s having the best time.
OMG his ears. OMG his tail. OMG her outfit. That fall though, at least it was before they got going, and she did so well to save it completely and keep going. That wink as well, she loved it (after the fall of course). Wow though she looks good. Some seriously good control, and yeah, that was quite good.

Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton Jive to ‘Happy’ from ‘Despicable Me 2’ (watch here)
I mean these two as minions is surely going to be the best thing since Aston and Janette as trolls right? I really like this song and they’re both so bubbly and full of energy that this could be really good. I really hope this is good, I could really like this, this is going to be so them.
I really loved that. It was seriously good, and quick, and full on. There was so much dancing and so much content and all in character. I felt like she tired a tiny bit at the end but it was incredible. What is it with jive’s on this show? That was hands down the best dance so far this year!

Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell American Smooth to ‘Breaking Free’ from ‘High School Musical’ (watch here)
Could they really have gone more stereotypical than having baby-faced Joe dancing to this. They are quite good at the lifts already, so I think this should suit them, although it is going to be Joe’s first attempt at ballroom… That Youtube guy has done nothing to make me like Youtube stars.
These two are just so adorable and I really like them. It was so much better than I was expecting, he hears the music so well and can really move pretty well. He gets so low in his knees, it’s quite impressive really. I’m not sure his posture is there but there is things to work on.

Graeme Swann and Oti Mabuse Charleston to ‘Spider-Man’ from ‘Spider-Man’ (watch here)
Oh I am looking forward to this Charleston. She does good Charlestons and I think he really wants to improve on last week. He looked so relieved when he was voted through and there were genuine tears so I think this is going to be performed with gusto.
Seriously can he wear something one week where my attention is not drawn crotchwards! That was really good and big and there was lots of swivel but jeez the lifts. I panicked for her constantly, but wow that was pretty good. I really liked it, well done!

Ashley Roberts and Pasha Kovalev Salsa to ‘(I’ve Had The) Time Of My Life’ from ‘Dirty Dancing’ (watch here)
This is a brave choice. It’s been done twice on Strictly as far as I can remember, famously by Louis Smith and Flavia, and also as a pro/celebrity dance. It’s got the potential to be epic, but it’s also got the potential to be a damp squib. I think we all want to know if they’re going to go for ‘that’ life to right??
That was breathtaking. That was incredible. That dance has really made me like them. The lift, wow, they nailed it! And the other lifts probably were more impressive just not as iconic and going into it in the middle when it could throw them completely. There was more content than in the movie as well which was needed, bloody loved it. Such good choreography.

Katie Piper and Gorka Marquez Foxtrot to ‘City of Stars’ from ‘La La Land’ (watch here)
I really didn’t love this film or get it at all really, but this song is beautiful and the dance number and colours that I associate with it (her dress, his shoes) make it an iconic number. I’m really hoping that she will come out of her shell this week because this could be spectacular.
They look incredible, and I swear that was a proper smile and you could feel the enjoyment. That little nose boop. That was actually quite moving and was really nice. When she was in hold as well, it was so light and dreamy and relaxed and natural. Awww Guys!

Seann Walsh and Katya Jones Paso Doble to ‘The Matrix Theme’ from ‘The Matrix’ (watch here)
I just love Seann so much and can’t wait to see him as Neo. I’ve been tuning into their social media accounts again this week and I just really want them to do so well because he is putting so much effort in. Yes, it doesn’t come naturally, but he is giving it some wellie. As if he is learning to fly as well.
His cackle at the end made that, he was so focused throughout and then boom, giggle. Seriously though, I thought that was really good and the choreography was properly clever and amazing, and I bloody loved it. I was just waiting for it to go wrong but he had the shaping and wow, it was clever and so much better than I expected. It was so powerful and it had the intensity and the drama.

Lauren Steadman and AJ Pritchard Cha Cha to ‘Fame’ from ‘Fame’ (watch here)
I am not really sure what I think about this. These really aren’t capturing my imagination yet and I really have no strong opinions on this song or film either.
She looked absolutely sensational, but just don’t feel like she owned it enough. Like it was good and it was timed but it wasn’t a knock out. It’s not that it’s wooden or anything, it’s just that it doesn’t feel showy enough.
Craig: 4 Darcey: 5 Shirley: 5 Bruno: 6 Total: 20
Charles Venn and Karen Clifton American Smooth to ‘Up Where We Belong’ from ‘An Officer And A Gentleman’ (watch here)
If they don’t go down the whole white suit route and don’t walk off doing the iconic lift from the film then what even is the point of this TV show. I don’t really like these two, but I am actually quite looking forward to this because who doesn’t love Richard Gere films? His Mum was a legend!
I really quite liked that and he wasn’t creepy. The lifts were quite good and it looked really nice. The thing is, I’ve already forgotten it and that’s not a great thing but it did make me hate him a little less.

Faye Tozer-Smith and Giovanni Pernice Quickstep to ‘You’re The One That I Want’ from ‘Grease’ (watch here)
If she goes for the catsuit, this is a brave choice. She looks stunning no matter what, but it will give her no where to hide. I do love a good quickstep though and she is really good so maybe this will be a winner. I hope it is.
She looks absolutely incredible. That was so good and fast and in time and in character. The sass, the quickstep was insane. It was spectacular. That right there is why I love this dance so much because it can be showstopping. I feel sorry for Danny having to follow it! It was smooth and it didn’t feel like she was running, I loved that I really did.
Craig: 9 Darcey: 9 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 9 Total: 36
Danny John-Jules and Amy Dowden Paso Doble to ‘The Greatest Show’ from ‘The Greatest Showman’ (watch here)
I feel like this has been the breakout musical film of the last year and that I am missing something as someone who hasn’t seen it yet. I think the outfits and the song could make a really great Paso spectacle, and let’s be honest, Pasos are always good to have in movie week.
That was really sharp, the timing on the cane taps and the twirls were really great. It was a really good number to have to finish the show. He was a great showman in that, and I actually really liked it. It really put him up front and centre.

Wow , what an incredible show. THAT is why movie week is one of the best things Strictly does! That was so so so so so goo, bloody loved it! My favourites did well and had major breakthroughs. There were dances that were breathtaking and memorable for all the right reasons. It really brought the joy of dancing out for everyone and it really made everyone up their game. The costumes and characters were unbelievably good. I feel tired after watching it!
I think we were all surprised by how brilliant Seann’s incredibly clever Paso was, and were all touched by the beauty and joy in Katie and Gorka’s foxtrot but I think we have to say hats off to the speed of Faye’s quickstep and the breathtaking lifts in the dirty dancing salsa was pretty incredible too. I can’t even cope with how good some of the dances were. I ended up voting for Seann and Katie because I want her to stay so badly, but Seann is just so entertaining to watch that I really can’t deal with him leaving.
I’m not sure how they’re going to make tomorrow night’s show anything like as brilliant as tonight, but I’m sure they’ll give it a good go! Tune in tomorrow for more singin’ in the rain and dancing in the streets. Until then…
I really like Singing in the Rain when it’s done as a dancing feature, but I have to be honest and say that I really didn’t feel that as a pro dance. I think Ore and Joanne just nailed it that much a couple of seasons ago that nothing will quite compare now, even if you put the dances in a rain pool. Hello though, 3 pro dancing pairs including NEIL and a bit of James Bond Gladys Knight singing, don’t mind if I do. THIS is what I am here for guys, this right here.
I remembered to vote this week, which made me feel much better about the dance off situation, especially as my favourites were all through. I just don’t think Charles and Lee are that likeable, and I am quite pleased to find out that my fellow Strictly fans agree. Lee looks absolutely gutted and also somewhat resigned to his fate, whereas Charles looks shocked! I don’t know why, it surely can’t be that surprising?! Even Lee’s attempt to shed layers and show that he was dancing better wasn’t enough, I’m glad he has gone.
Onwards to next week…
