Strictly Saturdays | Week 1

Hello One, Hello All, and welcome back to your weekly dose of all things Strictly. 2 weeks a go we watched the launch show, got to know the celebrities taking part, and finally found out who was partnered with who. The line-up might be less well known than previous years, but I’ve enjoyed watching them take their first steps, and unsurprisingly favourites have emerged. Now, with 15 celebs who are all dancing, you need to strap yourselves in because this is going to be a long ol’d night.

Before we dive in, the pros are on fire tonight. They’re bringing the emotion, I mean, did you see Karen and Kevin in their little bubble?! Tess and Claudia, you have nailed it tonight, and to be fair, so have the judges. Shirley you look incredible! Enough of that though, the dances:

Danny John Jules and Amy Dowden Foxtrot to Top Cat (watch here)

I really don’t know much about Danny, other than he’s the Red Dwarf guy, and as I have no feelings about Amy at all, I feel like I could forget these. They are quite cute in the intro though, but I have a feeling I won’t remember this by the end of the night.

D’you know what though, he’s pretty good! He’s smooth and he has the moved, it’s just a shame he decided to dance to the Top Cat theme in that bright pink suit when there is a whole world of music out there.

Kate Silverton and Aljaz Skorjanec Cha Cha to Kiss (watch here)

Awww I really liked that these two are together, I think he will be really good for her, and it’s so nice to see her playful and fun side. I’m not convinced she is going to be so good, but I think they are going to have a good time.

I’m not really feeling it. It feels very staccato and like you can see the joins from where she learnt it, although, she looks like she is having a great time and he clearly likes her in the glasses so that’s cute.

Lauren Steadman and AJ Pritchard Waltz to I’m Kissing You (watch here)

First things first, bravo and well done on your gold medal. I have no big thoughts on these and probably won’t by the end. I am intrigued by how they will cope in hold and with the intricate armwork, but I think they’ll be quite good because athletes often are.

Yep, called it, she was good and that was really quite cute and elegant. The hold was good and you really couldn’t tell about her disability which in itself is incredible. Can you imagine what they could do with more than 2 days training?

Seann Walsh and Katya Jones Tango to SexyBack (watch here)

I love these. I am calling it early that these are my favourites because they’re hilarious and genuine. I am not sure if I think this will be any good, but he won’t hold back and no matter what happens, I will be voting for him next week!

That was, wow, that was an experience. He went for it, they looked like that loved it, and that lift/chuck at the end was insane. I really enjoyed it, even if it wasn’t quite a conventional tango

Craig: 3 Darcey: 5 Shirley*: 4 Bruno: 6 Total: 18

*I like Shirley, I really do, but I think it’s so uncalled for to attack his appearance and even if he did take it well, there was no need to say what she said.

Vick Hope and Graziano De Prima Jive to Feel it Still (watch here)

These are going to be annoyingly good I think. She works with music all the time, and they look amazing together which always forgives a multitude of sins. I think I’ll get annoyed with them by the end, I don’t know why, but I feel like that will happen.

That was full of energy, but she definitely went really quite wrong at some point. It showed a lot of potential, but, it wasn’t as good as I thought it was going to be.

Susannah Constatine and Anton Du Beke Samba to Tico Tico (watch here)

I just really don’t like her and think that there is a very good chance that this will be painful to watch. She doesn’t look great in the footage from the training weeks, and she is irritatingly brash in VTs and instagram videos.

My eyes, My poor eyes. I cannot unsee that and yes, that is peak Anton. The maracas are nothing short of interesting, the popping out of the skirt is terrifying, and that was barely dancing. She just trots/moves funny.

Charles Venn and Karen Clifton Cha Cha to Ain’t No Love (Ain’t No Use) (watch here)

I don’t want to judge someone I know nothing about, but I find him really creepy and don’t understand why he is always leering and acting inapproprately. I don’t mind him when he tones that down, and actually think he will be quite good.

See that wasn’t inappropriate or creepy in anyway which is so much better than when he is giving interviews. He definitely feels the music and the beats and is potentially going to be quite good.

Ashley Roberts and Pasha Kovalev Viennese Waltz to Perfect (watch here)

I don’t blame her, because she is just going to do her best, but I think it’s unfair to have someone as a contestant who has been employed as a dancer in the past, no matter how different the dancing style. She is definitely going to be great.

That was really nice, it was smooth and serene and seriously good. But then that’s to be expected, right? She did hunch a little bit, well, maybe hunch isn’t the right word but sort of slouch, but still very good.

Dr. Ranj Singh and Janette Manrara Cha Cha to How Will I Know (watch here)

These two are just adorable in all of the ways. He is so camp, I love it, and she is so full of energy, they are going to be absolutely perfect together.

That song is so great. That dance is perfect for them. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone smile so much or have so much fun in week 1. Susan Calman was pretty excitable, but Dr. Ranj is having a ball. I am going to enjoy watching him.

Craig: 6 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 7 Total: 27

Katie Piper and Gorka Marquez Waltz to When We Were Young (watch here)

I was so pleased he got someone I’d like and I am so pleased that she has got someone who is so lovely. I think it might take a couple of weeks for her to come out of her shell, but I think their dances could be great. I’m so excited.

That was really nice, and pretty, and it’s such a shame that she slipped and made a mistake because as nervous as she was, she did really well and showed a lot of potential. If she shakes off the nerves, they could do really well.

Craig: 4 Darcey: 4 Shirley: 4 Bruno: 5 Total: 17

Graeme Swann and Oti Mabuse Samba to Soul Limbo (watch here)

These two have had me in stitches for days. Swanny is full on and will definitely give it his all, and Oti is stunning and one of my favourites, so I think these are my second favourites for sure.

That was, erm, I could see everthing. He should have had more support in the groin area because everything was swinging everywhere and it wasn’t the point of the dance. I mean, I don’t think it was. He was pretty good though, he gave it a lot.

Craig: 5 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 5 Total: 22

Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton Quickstep (watch here)

I really quite like these two and loved how much they wanted to be together. I love this dance, but it could be a hard one to have in week 1. I don’t know what to expect from these two, other than the fact he will show her off and they’ll have a good time.

That was actually really quite good. You could tell they couldn’t go full beans or she wouldn’t make it through, but what they did do was really good and she looked like she really enjoyed it. That was more than I expected.

Craig: 6 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 6 Total: 24

Lee Ryan and Nadiya Bychkova Waltz to Take It To The Limit (watch here)

I really don’t think I like these very much. They’re both a bit of a fan of the raunchy side of things from what I have seen on Instagram, and I just find them really quite unbearable.

That was a little bit much for a waltz, like did we need the head rolling and the touching? Also, did we spot a major slip in the middle there? I’m not quite sure what he slipped on as it wasn’t her dress like I initially thought, but he recovered well so fair play for that.

Craig: 4 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 6 Total: 22

Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell Jive to Take On Me (watch here)

I went into this thinking I would really dislike him, and then I thought in the launch show that I might not hate him, and then I’ve watched some of his vlogs and think I actually quite like him and shouldn’t judge him by his sister. Also, Dianne is hilarious so…

I didn’t know what to expect from him, but that was impressive, in time, and full of energy and proper jive moves. The jive is a hard dance to get in week one and he did really well! Well done Joe, that was a very pleasant surprise.

Craig: 6 Darcey: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 Total: 27

Faye Tozer Smith and Giovanni Pernice Cha Cha to Lullaby (watch here)

Faye was always my favourite in steps and we share a birthday, so I was pretty excited to find that she was on the show. I have started to actually not dislike Gio recently, and think that these will be up there with some of my preferred couples. I fear she’ll be a bit stiff and nervous at first, but she could be good.

I love that he choreographed some Steps moves in the middle and I love how confident and happy she looked out there. That was good and impressive and she looked amazing. Yay, well done.

Overall

Well, that was a show full of surprises in so many different ways. I actually think there are some really quite capable dancers on this series, some of them are not people that I would have pegged to be good, but I think it could actually be more interesting than I first expected.  My favourites didn’t do brilliantly, or horrendously to be fair, and the boys both looked like they had the best night ever which was great. I really like that they keep them all in to have a go at a latin and a ballroom number, which means we will get to see everyone perform again before we lose anyone, aaaaaand, we won’t be saying goodbye to anyone this week.

See you next week and remember…

…keep dancing!
