Right now, as I am typing this, there is a layer of snow (albeit a very thin pathetic layer) on my car. (It’s similar to the level of snow I have discovered I can have as a feature on my blog). We rarely get snow in Liverpool. And even more rarely get snow in December. This is momentous, thank you Storm Caroline. I’m also getting ready for Christmas; I have started wrapping, and I am thinking about Christmas cards, and my advent calendars are being enjoyed. I just love this time of year! I am also looking forward to a weekend away in London with Emma, a weekend that we have been planning since January 16th.

This week, I am going to start with all the positive things before I launch into any form of rant/complaint. And to be fair, even then it will be negligent. I have a lot to be happy about this week overall. Yes, it’s been a hard week in some respects, but in most it has been a really good one. I’ve made progress in a variety of different ways, most of which apply to Fat Friday, and I have a lot to look forward to over the next, well, year actually.
Things to look forward to: London this weekend, where I am going to see Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables on Saturday, visiting the Harry Potter Studio Tour on Sunday, going on a Palace of Westminster Tour and to see Hamilton on Monday, interspersed with shopping on Oxford St, introducing Emma to an alarming number of London’s tourist attractions (including but not limited to Harrod’s, Hamley’s, and Trafalger Square) and of course, the obligatory Christmas visit to Winter Wonderland. We’ve been planning this for so long, the reviews for Hamilton are so good, that I feel like I could actually burst with excitement. Let’s hope the snow doesn’t stop us getting there, or getting back. It’s also the first few days of a pleasant stint off in the run up to Christmas.
After that is Christmas of course, which is a time of year that I love. This year I have a brilliant run off between 22nd December and 1st January, so I plan to enjoy it properly. Then, in the new year, we have two shows in Liverpool to look forward to: Wicked and Hairspray, and the newest edition: The Killers. Yep, they were so good last month (see my review here) that when they announced another show in a local stadium, we decided that we should book another evening. And once that’s gone, we will well and truly be on the countdown for Disney. Eek.
Things to be pleased with: wait until you see the stats guys, but, a spoiler, I really upped my exercise amounts this week. I went to Zumba, I’ve run, and I’ve dabbled in workplace yoga again. I felt like I was better at each, which is a lovely development. We had a new instructor on Sunday for Zumba, who I definitely preferred, understood, and followed much better. I enjoyed the Zumba class on Thursday more than I usually did, and actually did almost every single move in time. That is unheard of it when it’s the normal lady. Yoga was still difficult, but I definitely think more awareness, and actually listening when the breath and doing the exact moves in the exact order really helps. My balance is pretty rubbish still, and I’m still a bit too big and heavy to find it comfortable doing some things well, but I’m getting there.
And running, well, I don’t like it. I don’t hate it though either, which I think pretty much amounts to as much as I can hope. I embarked on the last run of the week on Monday. It was a new place to run, work. There is a lot of flat road and wooded paths where I work, so I changed as soon as I finished my shift, and set off. Yes, I found it quite hard, but I was determined to keep it up so… Then, I decided to take on the first run of week 2. It was wet and cold, and getting a little darker, but the weather is a better adversary than the treadmill, so I went with it. I actually didn’t find it too bad, which was new. If anything, I didn’t find it any harder than week 1, which is a nice improvement considering that you run for longer stints.
Now for the moaning (it is almost obligatory after all). My legs hurt. Like, really hurt. And not in a ‘you didn’t stretch’ way, or a ‘cut back a bit way’ but in a ‘you’ve taken up running so this is your life now’ kinda way. The calf pains are doing my head in, and no amount of stretching, or even yoga, seems to be assisting with that. My shins also hurt (a quick Google has diagnosed shin splints) but if I’m honest, I don’t know how to help these either! Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated, as it’s the thing that has taken the glossy edge off a good week.
All in all, I feel better this week. The exercise has made a huge difference, and despite the fact that we treated ourselves to a post-Zumba festive Tavern Brunch on Sunday, and the fact I ate some chocolate, I felt fitter. I still don’t feel different in terms of size or weight, but, for the first time ever I felt like I was actually making strides with fitness, which was one of the main goals of Fat Friday. Hopefully the weight will continue to go before Christmas and I can feel thinner soon too. As much as I wish the weight loss was much quicker, it could be worse than 2lbs a week average I suppose.
