Happy Thanksgiving! It’s Black Friday everyone, even all of us here in the UK have embraced this shopping phenomenon and taken it as an excuse to go crazy with our cards an buy things that we definitely didn’t need but absolutely wanted. I’ve taken it as a prime opportunity to crack on with my Christmas shopping! Thanksgiving was always going to be a hard week for me for a multitude of reasons, but, throw in an impromptu cake sale and recovering from illness, and it became even harder. Let’s not moan too much though eh?

I don’t want to moan to much more about being ill, but, I want to moan about being ill, so I am going to moan about being ill here. OK? Good. I hate being sick/feeling unwell. I only needed one day off work when I actually could barely move, but it wiped me out for a good 10 days in total. Yes, being sick is awful and nasty, but in some ways, the post-viral cough is the worst bit. I can deal with a cough in the day, as annoying as it can be, but I am useless at dealing with a cough at night in bed. My cough became so bad at points this week that I quite literally coughed so hard I was nearly physically sick and couldn’t breathe for about 15mins (this happened on more than one occasion) and also had 2 nights of lying there with a low level persistent cough that just kept me awake and annoyed me, but did nothing else.
I have done quite a lot this week despite my illness. I have made real progress with my Christmas shopping and have pretty much bought, or thought of buying, almost everyone a Christmas present that I buy for. I think I have just one brother and one friend left. I have no idea what I am getting them but I have a whole month to decide. I have attended my first set of Christmas markets this year, Birmingham, which is the first time I’ve ever been to a Market in the city. The girls of Viney Prospects were meeting up as a mini reunion, and so we piled on different trains, and headed for the chilly stalls and the bullring. It was a really great day, we had a lovely time, and I purchased a special treat (I also carried it around with me, without a bag. He attracted a lot of attention). It was nice to see you ladies! I also had a good shop with my parents on my day off, and have another day planned with Emma this week.
I have done precisely no exercise. Again. This is getting bad. To be fair, for a lot of the week I was feeling really ill still, which Emma and I used as an excuse to avoid the gym. Then, when we did plan to go, we went for our Thanksgiving meal and that clashed with Zumba, and obviously Zumba didn’t win out. I also missed yoga at work as I was busy. I have walked a fair amount this week, in fact, I’ve walked further than I have done in a while because of days out shopping and visiting the girls in Birmingham. This week, I really want to get back into the exercise routine. I have Zumba planned on Sunday morning, with Emma, and I have walking round town planned with Emma on Tuesday. We’ll potentially do Yogalates at some point, and maybe do another class or gym session later in the week too.
Speaking of Thanksgiving, it was the big US holiday yesterday. I had the day off, and the evening today, and we usually go to a big Thanksgiving dinner at my Aunt’s house. She is from Akron, Ohio, and puts on an incredible spread. It’s undoubtedly my favourite meal of the year. Sadly, due to a family emergency that has seen my Aunt and Uncle travel to the US indefinitely, our traditional Thanksgiving has been cancelled until next year. So, we decided to do something completely different: we went to the local curry house, and had the most incredible Indian meal. I also took another selfie. I briefly mentioned taking photos of myself in a previous posts and how I finally had a picture I liked. Well, I took another that I don’t mind, so I have decided to try and take semi-regular selfie’s during this progress in the hope that it tracks my visual process and may help me see the difference between the beginning and the end of this journey.
OK, so I’ve had an Indian meal out, but this week I have actually eaten relatively healthily, and feel like I am about to get back into this. I helped with a bake sale to raise money for the Movember Campaign of one of my awesome colleagues, and managed to say no while pushing the trolley of cakes around the office. I know, how good was it to say no?! I still donated of course, but that was willpower. I made food again today for Emma and I (Moroccan chicken and chickpeas with Mediterranean roasted veg) and realise that portion control is my biggest issue going forward. Yes, the food I am eating is healthy, and yes I am saying no to unhealthy foods (in the main), but I am (probably) still eating too much at main meals. Hmmm, something to work on for next week…

I am actually both surprised and re-motivated by my progress this week. I think it shows that it is as much about what I am eating as the exercise I am doing. I think my initial target of 2 stones lost by Christmas is now pretty much a pipe dream, but, there is still definitely hope that I’ll be close. Right? To be honest, I’m most looking forward to the day where I can see and feel the difference.
