Strictly Come Dancing: Week 9 @ Blackpool

Get out your party hats and you sticks of rock because Strictly is going to Blackpool! Yep, it’s that time of the year already, when the BBC camera people do their up most to make Blackpool look anything other than horrible and trashy, and use every cliché in the book to showcase the dancers and their celebrity partners! Things always get exciting at Blackpool, where people up their games in the Tower Ballroom and the large dancefloor allows for brilliant theatrics and bigger dances (Need I remind you of Danny Mac’s Charleston or Louise Redknapp’s Paso Doble last year!)

Last week, we saw Ruth and Anton fall by the way side and miss the opportunity to catch the train to Blackpool. In some ways I will miss the theatrics and stupidity that came with their dances, but, for me it was time for them to leave the ballroom, and think it was the perfect week. It also meant that all of my favourites made it through to this weeks mega show. I’m excited. And because it is the Blackpool special, we get an extra pro-dance to open the show up too!

….and it was an odd dance to say the least. There were fire dancers and unicyclers and jugglers and acrobats and the celebs were all in there. It was fairly spectacular and Joe looked like he was having the best night of his life. And where that was amazing, the dresses of Tess and Claudia weren’t. Tess was rocking a particularly loud and proud yellow number, and Claudia was wearing a ruffled mess.

Mollie King and AJ Pritchard | Charleston to ‘Wings’ (watch here)

I can tell you right now that unless this scores 40, or AJ drops Mollie on her head, I will absolutely not remember this dance later on. I just don’t think it will be super. I won’t be awful, but it won’t make me think about it later on.

I actually thought that she was going to die, I thought we were going to witness Mollie’s death during those lifts, which was a shame because it wasn’t half bad before that, I could tell what it was and she was actually moving!

Susan Calman and Kevin Clifton | Paso Doble to ‘Strictly Ballroom’ (watch here)

Kevin + Paso + Blackpool = dream! I can’t wait for this. Kevin has a good pedigree at Blackpool, and a good pedigree doing Pasos at Blackpool, and he has wanted to do this for series. I want the knee slides and the comedy cut in the music. I hope this is good.

I hate myself for thinking this, but I am actually a little disappointed. I was hoping it would be epic, and I think if it was someone else, it would have been. I will still vote for them, but I have a feeling that they may be at the bottom of the leader board, and that this would be the ideal week for them to go in some ways. Oooo did I spot J K Rowling in the audience in a Susan t-shirt? I love that they’re the good friends.

Craig: 5 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 | Total: 25

Debbie McGee and Giovanni Pernice | Samba  to ‘Spice Girls Medley’ (Watch here)

I have a feeling that these are just going to get overmarked for a dance that I am going to hate. I don’t like them, I don’t like the samba, and I am not a lover of the Spice Girls.

I just thought that was fairly poor. It was blocky and awkward and weird looking, and completely over praised by the judges. I’ve seen every dance in every series of this show and for the first time ever I feel like it is fixed.

Craig: 7 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 9 | Total: 33

Jonnie Peacock and Oti Mabuse | Tango to ‘Sweet Dreams’ (watch here)

Oooo this could be really good. I love the Tango, and love the song so if he gets this right it would be amazing.

Oh that was so close to be amazing. The electronic premise was unusual and brilliant, the timing with the other dancers was awesome, and I just thought it worked really well. I am starting to feel sorry for him regarding their comments about his bum sticking out, I wish he would stick up for himself and explain about the problems he has using his hips with his lost foot. Oh well. I’ll vote for you Jonnie.

Craig: 6 Darcey: 7 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 7 | Total: 26

Gemma Atkinson and Aljaz Skorjanec | American Smooth to ‘Downtown’ (watch here)

I felt so sorry for these two last week because their dance was slammed and had really given me goosebumps. I love happy they are to be in Blackpool and how much she is pleased to be in the North West, I genuinely believe she is absolutely made up to be there.

Oh I loved that. It was light and floaty and happy and I just thought that it was amazing. The lifts were beautiful and she was doing some amazing things with her hands, and yes, nailed it. I am so pleased that they have finally got a 10, so deserved and they looked so happy which it makes it that much better. I know that this will be one that I will rewatch over and over again from this series.

Davood Ghadami and Nadiya Bychkova | Paso Doble to ‘Live and Let Die’ (watch here)

Right, this is my favourite song, ever. Like literally my favourite song ever. This should be brilliant because he is super masculine and she likes to throw herself at him and they’re doing bond. I have high hopes now I like these.

OK so that was pretty good and the song was well done and there was fire. I would have preferred it if he was in a tuxedo, and there wasn’t the stupid parachute at the beginning, but all in all that was a solid performance.

Craig: 8 Darcey: 9 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 9 | Total: 35

Alexandra Burke and Gorka Marquez | Quickstep to ‘We’re in the Money’ (watch here)

I love these two and have enjoyed watching their Insta stories in the lead up to them going to Blackpool. He had a hard time of it last year after being punched in the face and has never actually done a proper dance there, so this should be memorable for the both of them. Aaaand it’s a quickstep on that big floor and it’s these two. Oh I can’t wait.

I bloody loved it. It was amazing. It was so stylised and quick and amazing. It was just oozing class and quality and effortlessness and it was amazing. That was something else, one of my favourite dances of the series so far.

Joe McFadden and Katya Jones | Salsa to ‘Ride on Time’ (watch here)

I have heard (from Emma) that these two are following the trajectory of previous winners and are the bookies favourites at the moment. I’d be happy with that. These lifts look interesting in the VT, and you know it will be a full on routine for Blackpool. C’mon Joe.

Jesus Christ on a bike. I thought he’d dropped her there, it seriously took me a second and Emma about 5 to realise that it was supposed to happen like that. It felt very on the edge from being great to disastrous, thankfully it didn’t go round. He looked like he was loving life through out there!!

Craig: 8 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 9 | Total: 34

  1. Alexandra & Gorka – 39
  2. Gemma & Aljaz – 28
  3. Davood & Nadiya – 35
  4. Joe & Katya – 34
  5. Debbie & Giovanni – 33
  6. Mollie & AJ – 29
  7. Jonnie & Oti – 26
  8. Susan & Kevin – 25

I have voted and I have loved it. I really enjoyed it this week, for the first time you could really feel that the numbers are dwindling and that we’re down to the good’uns now. I like it when all the dances are good and exciting, it just makes for a more impressive and complete show!

I am very worried about Jonnie and Susan. I think, if Susan were to ever go from the show, this would be a good week considering the place and the dance and the importance for them. I worry that she is too popular though and that it would be Jonnie vs Mollie again and that she would be saved and that I would be sad. I voted for Jonnie, I did, so I am hoping he is safe but I’m concerned. OH GOD what if it is Susan v Jonnie? It doesn’t bear thinking about!

Until tomorrow….

…keep dancing!
