Helloooooo, and welcome to a spooky, scary, spectacular of a Halloween special. As things hot up at Hellstree, the costumes come out, the wacky make-up is at it’s best, and fun personalities dance across the ballroom in the most entertaining night of the series. Week 6 is always the turning points, where the worst guys start to to linger at the bottom, the guys in the middle take off, and the guys at the top really get into their stride. There is an extra pro dance, there is a lots of awesome outfits, and we get to see Count Dave Arch in all his finery.
Bruno is back (which I’m not actually sure I am happy about) as Beetlejuice, Craig has dressed as the Joker, Darcey channelling Red Riding Hood, and Shirley absolutely killing it as Cruella De Vil. There are spiders and ghouls, witches and the Mother of Dragons, what more could you want?
Last week we (finally) saw the end of Brian and Amy, and I really can’t say I am at all disappointed. I was waiting for him to go since week 1, and was ready for him to bite the bullet. Joe also got his first 10 of the series, rising back to the (near) top of the leaderboard, which was a welcome sight!
To start the show, the ghostly pros performed a pretty awesome dance. The theming was so creepy and ghastly and looked so incredible. Neil was also the middle of the dance rocking his costume to perfection. I literally love him. Claudia looks pretty in her flapper style dress, it must be hard for her to get into the Halloween mood after everything with her daughter a couple of years ago, and Tess looks fierce in her deep red velvet SYMMETRICAL dress. Now, let’s get on with show…
Jonnie Peacock and Oti ‘Monstrous’ Mabuse | Cha Cha to ‘Troublemaker’ (watch here)
Have they gone with a pirate theme just because he has only got one leg? This is so brilliant, it’s literally the most perfect theming. He seems so happy and so into it which is nice to see, and she is absolutely spectacularly stunning as an Esmeralda-ery piratess. Wow!
Oh dear Jonnie, that wasn’t your best dance by any means. There was next to no hip movement until there was HIP MOVEMENT. I am a little worried about him this week, I am definitely going to have to vote for him!
Craig: 4 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 5 Bruno: 5 | Total: 20
Ruth Langsford and Anton ‘Demonic’ DuBeke | Quickstep to ‘Bewitched Theme Song’ (watch here)
I think this might be the point that I lose my patience with her, because I love the quickstep. I think I am ready for her to go now.
That wasn’t actually horrendous, but I am not sure it was that good as a quickstep but she looked a little more comfortably doing a proper ballroom dance. It was a bit silly, and Anton once again looked like he got too into it.
Craig: 4 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 6 | Total: 22
Simon Rimmer and Karen ‘Cobweb’ Clifton | American Smooth (Viennese Waltz) to ‘Delilah’ (watch here)
I feared these two were going to go last week, and I didn’t vote for them so I felt doubly bad that he was in the dance off. I am not very sure that this is going to be at all smooth…
This is going to sound way harsher than I mean it, but if this premise and this dance to this song was done by someone who could actually dance it would be one of the best dances on Strictly. Sadly, it was clunky and Simon was just not cut for this. I think this might be his time…
Craig: 2 Darcey: 5 Shirley: 5 Bruno: 4 | Total: 16
Gemma Atkinson and Aljaz ‘Scary’ Skorjanec | Jive to Ever Fallen In Love’ (watch here)
I just love these two, and I love how happy he looks with her. They’re trying so hard with these crappy graphics, but she just can’t. I love that she is so ‘real’. As much as I hate that term she just seems to be so normal and lovely. I didn’t have much of an opinion of her before this show, but she is pretty fab.
I thought that was pretty good. It’s sometimes a little off looking, which is probably to do with her height, but yes, I liked that. Well done guys. I also like how hard they worked to not say they were doing a Buffy and Angel dance even though that is clearly what it was.
Craig: 7 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 8 | Total: 30
Joe McFadden and Katya ‘Jeepers’ Jones | Foxtrot to ‘Trouble’ (watch here)
I love Joe and I was so happy for him and for Katya last week, but I really cannot get on board with this look that he is sporting for Halloween week. It’s so creepy and unsettling and reminds me of the Child Catcher. Nope. No.
That was a little bit weird and contemporary but I think it kind of suited the Halloween feel and the spidery feel, and the make up aside, I really quite liked it. Not quite last week but it was really quite good.
Craig: 8 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 8 | Total: 32
Mollie King and AJ ‘Pumpkin’ Pritchard | Cha Cha to ‘Better The Devil You Know’ (watch here)
They completely brushed over the fact he wasn’t in a lot of their training didn’t they?! I am getting a little bit tired of these because I feel like they are being consistently overmarked, and as much as I hope they prove me wrong, it’s starting to really bug me now.
I really think I am going to have to accept the fact that I fancy AJ. I am going to have to see beyond the age thing and accept that his muscles and his arms are reason enough. Although I need to stop seeing her leering in a catsuit and him swinging his tail and his *ahem* yes, all about the place.
Do we watch different dances to the judges? Preach it Shirley!
Craig: 6 Darcey: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 | Total: 27
Alexandra Burke and Gorka ‘Midnight’ Marquez | Tango to ‘Maneater’ (watch here)
They were so harsh on these two last week in my humble opinion. These two are such a good pairing. They’ll be good tonight, you just know it.
I loved that. I really like a good tango and that was fast and staccato and he looked amazing. The song was so perfect for them, and that had all the things I like in a Halloween dance. Well done guys.
Craig: 9 Darcey: 9 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 8 | Total: 35
Davood Ghadami and Nadiya ‘Bloodcurdling’ Bychkova | Rumba to ‘Wicked Game’ (watch here)
Emma has just realised the her name literally almost has bitch in it. I can’t believe she’s never noticed that before. She literally lives up to her name. I am dreading this. I hate rumbas and I don’t like her, and this could very well be beyond indecent.
He is literally all glittery and vacant like a Twilight vampire. He could not have lunged or looked longingly over his curled hands anymore if he tried. I didn’t like that at all.
Craig: 5 Darcey: 7 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 7 | Total: 25
Susan Calman and Kevin ‘Cackling’ Clifton | Foxtrot to ‘Killer Queen’ (watch here)
This pairing is everything I have ever wanted in a Strictly partnership, and everything that I didn’t know that I wanted, all rolled into one joyous, wonderful ball of goodness. I bloody love them. I love how much they just love and embrace everything. I love how much J K Rowling fangirls over her. I love that Emilia Clarke, the Mother of freaking Dragons herself, recorded them a good luck message. I love that they have a laugh and do impressions, and just make the most of every second they have together.
It wasn’t the best dance I’ve ever seen, BUT she came in on a blooming dragon. He couldn’t hide his delighted smile at dressing as Jon Snow and she was positively beaming as Daenerys. I don’t think there has ever been such a camp Jon Snow interpretation, and I am not sure that there has ever been a foxtrot quite like that on Strictly, but just look at them. They exude everything that this show should be all about!
Craig: 3 Darcey: 5 Shirley: 5 Bruno: 5 | Total: 18
Debbie McGee and Giovanni ‘Petrifying’ Pernice | Charleston to ‘Frankie’ (watch here)
I literally can’t contain my joy at that VT. They had at least 10 Gio ‘Debbie’s. The way he says Debbie literally makes me burst out laughing every time. I think that’s why I don’t mind him anymore. I also really like the fact that he is willing to look absolutely horrendous in those outfits.
Right, I literally thought that I was about to see her vagina, and then when he started to lift her I genuinely thought I was going to watch her die. This is going to get way better marks than I thought it deserved. There was a mistake in at least one of the lifts.
Craig: 9 Darcey: 10 Shirley: 10 Bruno: 10 | Total: 39
****************** 10 ALERT*****************
Aston Merrygold and Janette Manrara-ha-ha-haaa | Paso Doble to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ (watch here)
I am literally super excited for this because I think this will be epic and brilliant and I think this will be his dance for sure! I like how much they have just thought, well they’re supposed to be ghosts so let’s just have a glitterplosion on their faces. Janette also looks incredible!
I absolutely loved that. That was fierce. It was fast. I had shaping and innovation, and there was a proper tap section in the middle with all flamenco steps. I bloody loved that, what an end to the show!
Craig: 9 Darcey: 10 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 10 | Total: 38

Well, wasn’t that all kinds of exciting and thrilling and awesome, eh? I don’t think I have ever seen people embrace the joy of dance quite like Susan and Kevin, and I don’t think I have ever had a series where I like quite so many people on the show. This was a good week, and good Halloween special, with a lot of great and memorable dances.
And two 10 dances, eh? Two more of the strictly stars have got 10’s, which puts my ***10 ALERT*** to four. I personally thought that Aston and Janette were better than Debbie and Giovanni, but there is no doubting that leaving those two, well, three dances if you count the brilliance that was Susan and Kevin, was a fabulous end to the show.
And now, I’ve watched, I’ve voted, and I’ve blogged, there’s not much left so say. Until tomorrow night….
The best bit about Halloween results shows is invariably the pro dance at the start of the show. It was a huge shame that Brendan was at the centre of a dance that absolutely revolved around him, and a lack of Neil was sad, but it was super creepy and super stylised. I’m not sure if I’d say it was a dance or a piece of moving art, but what’s the difference really?!
Watching the recap with the judges will definitely lead to a few complaints. I completely got where Shirley was coming from and don’t reply think she was inappropriate but I guess folks won’t be happy. She makes more sense when she explains things than anyone else. I’m so glad we have her!
The dance off this week wasn’t a shock because Simon had sort of accidentally revealed he left on Sunday Brunch, but his opponent Mollie was a shock. I guess people just don’t want to vote for her and aren’t enamoured by her. I’m not. Once it was her in the dance off it was a no brainer and Simon’s time was rightly up. I’m just so relieved it was Susan or Jonnie.
See you next week when they’ll be fireworks on the dance floor!
