Strictly Come Dancing: Week 5

It’s Saturday night, which can only mean one thing: STRICTLY. And this week, things are a little different in the ballroom. There are only three judges. It looks odd, the scores are going to appear odd. The ballroom just isn’t the same without Bruno there! Thankfully he is only off with a packed work schedule and not illness or something, but it will be nice to have him back soon!

Things got hot on the ballroom floor last week as we saw the first 10’s of the series (3 of them to be precise) which included Shirley Ballas’s first ever 10 on Strictly. Her jive was absolutely incredible, like seriously good. Unlike Charlotte’s poor attempt at the jive. It was chalk and cheese. I’m so relieved that she has gone! It would have been unjust to have seen anyone else leave. I really think I want to see Brian go this week, #jussayin’.

Can I just say, something strange is happening this series. I have liked what Claudia and Tess have been wearing every week. Claudia looks amazing in the blouse and trouser combo, and Tess is wearing a dress with two shoulders. TWO. They match, they’re a pair, it’s very unusual, and she looks amazing.

Davood Ghadami and Nadiya Bychkova | Jive to ‘Tell Her About It’ (watch here)

I think it was a huge surprise that these were in the dance off last week, I’m hoping that is the shock that she needs to make these routines more accessible and fun and watchable and less like a sex show. I am a little worried that he is going to be too big and bulky for a jive though. A lot to live up to though, the jive last week that topped the leaderboard was incredible!

Well it was a lot lighter, both sex wise and footwork wise. I quite liked it. I think the more I hate her the more I like him. He looks ill again, he is going so gaunt in the face. Nerves? Weightloss?

Craig: 6 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 8 | Total: 22

Mollie King and AJ Pritchard | Viennese Waltz to ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’ (watch here)

I watched It Takes Two this week, and her dress looked amazing on that. I think this could be cute and stunning and elegant to the max. I have very high hopes for this, I do like a good viennese waltz and they’re back in hold.

AJ is doing things that AJ should not be able to do. It’s all close and strokey and I don’t like it. His ass tho’. That was good, she looked stunning, they looked cute, and while it could have been a little better, it was really good!

Craig: 8 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 8 | Total: 24

Simon Rimmer and Karen Clifton | Charleston to ‘Fit As A Fiddle (And Ready For Love)’ (watch here)

Oh dear I am worried about this. I think they should shave Tim Lovejoy and just switch him and Simon out. I think they should snap Tim up for next year now. Please? Thank you in advance.

Oh dear. I am going to have to vote for him again this week I think. That wasn’t good. There was no swivel and there were timing issues and oh dear, I fear the dance off again!

Craig: 5 Darcey: 5 Shirley: 6 | Total: 16

Debbie McGee and Giovanni Pernice | Rumba to ‘Baby Can I Hold You’ (watch here)

I bloody hate the rumba, there is nothing good about it. I don’t really like these much either, but I kinda hate that the more behind the scenes stuff I see the less I hate him. I can’t take to her at all, but he was good in that VT.

As far as rumbas go it wasn’t that bad. I think it was probably a good dance to be fair but I didn’t like it. It wasn’t too involved and sexy, I am pleased that went a bit more meaningful and romantic. I feared worse.

Craig impersonating Bruno is categorically the best thing that I have ever seen on this show. That was brilliant, and he read the situation of her being emotional so well. It’s nice to see that side of him. Bravo Craig, bravo.

Craig: 9 Darcey: 9 Shirley: 9 | Total: 27

Brian Conley and Amy Dowden | Jive to ‘It’s Not Unusual’ (watch here)

Let’s be honest, these two are one of the weaker couples left, and I for one am hoping that they go this week. I know that’s harsh, but they’re not the right kind of rubbish.

Oh I hated that. The outifts were offensive to my eyes, they made mistakes. I felt like it was really overmarked. Don’t know what else to say really.

Craig: 4 Darcey: 6 Shirley: 6 | Total: 16

Susan Calman and Kevin Clifton | Cha Cha to ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ (watch here)

I am not sure that anyone ever has or ever will have as much fun and get as much fun out of doing Strictly as Susan seems to be. It’s so uplifting and delightful to watch her learn to dance and perform on a Saturday night. Last week was just nothing short of joyous. She looks like she is working Kevin seriously hard this week, shouldn’t it be the other way round?

Well that was technically the best, and it was a bit too faffy at the beginning, but God she looked like she enjoyed it. She always does though right?  I’ve voted guys, I can’t have my favourites going.

Craig: 4 Darcey: 5 Shirley: 7 | Total: 16

Aston Merrygold and Janette Manrara | Waltz to ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ (watch here)

Awwww that VT with his girlfriend. She is stunning and seemed so proud. I have really high hopes for this, I think it could be really wonderful.

I don’t get emotional about dances really, I’m just not that kind of person, but that was as close as I got. It was really beautiful and you could really feel all the emotion and feels in it. I think they’re so much harsher on him than other dancers. I know that he is good, but it’s not that fair. Loved it!

Craig: 8 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 9 | Total: 24

Ruth Langsford and Anton Du Beke | Samba to ‘Love Is In The Air’ (watch here)

This is like a trip in work here, all this flight information and British Airways logos. Loving it. I think this is going to be unbelievably underwhelming OR over the top comedy to cover the fact she can’t dance. Which one? Which one?

Oh wow that was an assault on the eyes. The sleeves and the shakes and the stupidity. Wow that was erm, yes, flamboyant and crazy, and not really that brilliant. Memorable yes, good, no.

Craig: 5 Darcey: 5 Shirley: 6 | Total: 16

Gemma Atkinson and Aljaz Skorjanec | Foxtrot to ‘Believe’ (watch here)

I am pretty sure that this is Aljaz’s favourite dance. They’re so tall and stunning that I really think this could be absolutely extraordinary. His ickle face when he does this!

That was so slow and eerie in the best kind of way. It was just like you were swept along with this romantic airy dance and it was really pretty. It was incredibly gentle. Aljaz just looks so happy and content when he dances this dance, and those comments eh? Not bad Gemma, not too shabby. I love how much she lives to make him happy, and I love how much he is always happy when he dances with her.

Craig: 8 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 8 | Total: 24

Joe McFadden and Katya Jones | Paso Doble to ‘Diablo Rojo’ (watch here)

A traditional. flamenco style Paso Doble. I can hear Emma smiling all the way from Thornaby. She loves Joe, she loves Spanish themed Paso’s with proper music and flamenco steps. I think this is made for her. I am hoping that he is going to use his acting skills well in this, because his smiley self is not made for the Paso!

Wow Joe Wow! That was unexpected. The shaved topless chest. The strong flamenco steps and shaping. The knee slides. The music. The power. The strength. Now that was what I enjoy to watch. I am very pleased that you’re nailing it again, because that was so so so good. I loved Shirley before, but ‘The phoenix has risen from the ashes’ guys.

Craig: 7 Darcey: 9 Shirley: 10 | Total: 26

***********10 ALERT*******10 ALERT********************

Alexandra Burke and Gorka Marquez | Samba to ‘Shape of You’ (watch here)

If they go up anymore they’re going to be getting top scores for the rest of the show. That jive last week though! I think we all know that these are the favourites and the ones to beat, and I think she will nail this, but I wonder is she peaking too early, and is there a chance that she’s only going to really excel in the Latin dances?

That looked amazing. It felt incredible. There is so much fire and passion and technique with these two. I get what the judges are saying, but it was just miles better than a lot of the dances this week, that definitely under-marked. C’mon judges. I also think one of my life’s purposes is to watch Gorka dance.

Craig: 7 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 8 | Total: 23

Jonnie Peacock and Oti Mabuse | Quickstep to ‘Part-Time Lover’ (watch here)

I think these two are just quietly sliding under the radar and are actually going to go quite far, which I am pleased about because I really like them both. I do think the acting lessons will make all the difference for him, if he can sell his routines a little more then he will be even more popular.

That was bloody good. I don’t think I have ever seen a quickstep routine look so simultaneously quick, slow, and easy. I know he is a sprinter but he made that look so easy and effortless. I really liked it. Like really liked it. I am a big fan of the quickstep as well so maybe that played into it.

‘Pardon the pun’. Oh bless Shirley, she really thought she has put her foot in it. ‘ba bam bam cccshhhh*

Craig: 7 Darcey: 8 Shirley: 9 | Total: 24

  1. Debbie & Giovanni – 27
  2. Joe & Katya – 26
  3. Mollie & AJ/Aston & Janette/Gemma & Aljaz/Jonnie & Oti – 24
  4. Alexandra & Gorka – 23
  5. Davood & Nadiya – 22
  6. Brian & Amy/Simon & Karen/Susan & Kevin/Ruth & Anton – 16

We have another 10! Yay! Some of my favourites are much closer to the top of the leaderboard! Yay! Susan and Kevin are joint bottom and need votes! Boooooo! I voted a few times for them, y’know, because I would be nothing short of heartbroken if they were no longer in the show.

A lack of Bruno was really felt today, and even though Craig did a great impression, the scoring panel wasn’t the same. Three judges mean a lower overall score. I know that is obvious, but there are less combinations possible and it means that the leaderboard is so bunched up. I have to confess though, I quite liked the show without Bruno. It was a lot less like a pantomime and there was less over the top theatrics. I just liked it without him, which makes me sad.

Until tomorrow….

….keep dancing!

Brian has gone. I can’t try and review the whole show, because we have just seen the worst dance off that there has ever been on Strictly, and Brian and Amy have finally left. I haven’t liked them from the beginning, and it was most definitely their time. It has been a long time since I have sighed such a big sigh of relief that someone was safe. Thank you to everyone else who votes for Susan!
